How to detect 24V AC on 1-wire?
« on: February 04, 2010, 16:14:18 »
Hi,

I've got a 12 zone wireless floorheating system which uses 24V AC motors to regulate the valves for the different zones.
It would be cool if I could log when the different zones are active and compare the opening/closing with the actual temperatures in the rooms. I already have the room sensors in place, but how do I interface towards 24V AC without paying a fortune?

How do the motors operate? Do they just open/close the valves or are they in operation for some time?

If its "standard" old wirsbo stuff i guess its based on "heat-gas-expansion" wich means that the 24V AC is there as long as the "valve" needs to be open...
easy method: cheap 24v relays in parallell with "motors"
nice method:   http://www.crouzet-usa.com/catalog/gordos/standard_input.pdf
and then to a 1wire switch
PS tillberga warehouse has a small batch  ??? you can buy for 30:- / st + shipping ;) modell GORDOS IDC5 (IDC works for AC too) (ELFA rackarna tar 199 + mums...)

Optocoupler + 1-wireswitch ? I don´t know, but isn´t that possible to use?

it will probably count the 50Hz... but with a RC and a diod it would probably work...

It's actually a system called Megatherm Wireless which has the possibility of reading the current room temperature via a RS-232 but to do that you need to "reset" the controller in order to get into "read-mode", it cannot be done while it's in operation... stupid, stupid  >:(

Control of the temperature valves sounds much like the "heat-gas-expansion" principle. The controller applies 24V AC as long as heating is required. If no zone needs heating the circulation pump is also shut off. Once every day all 12 zones are opened for a couple of minutes. This should prevent that the valves get stuck.

The GORDOS IDC5 solution sounds interesting but I don't really understand what "tillberga warehouse" means?!
The idea with optocouplers is also interesting but I have no clue as to now such a circuit would look like  :-\

It's a generation thing... if you think that A-Teens actually wrote all those songs then you're too young, sorry.
But if you're an old fart like me who still remember the first time you walked into Clas Ohlson in Insjön
(NO ! The new local stores with all the useless nonsense they have nowadays do NOT count)
and almost thought you died and went to heaven... well... the Tillberga Warehouse is a bit of the same thing.

I'm not sure what impresses me the most... the fact that someone actually have all that stuff as their personal
warehouse - or the fact that the missus let Walle keep it :D

i can test how the IDC5 works on 24V AC if you are really intrested...

dont A-teens write there songs?  but i remember buying my first stereo in insjön... nice;)

A-Teens what the f... is that? Is it a bumper sticker?  Or a new pornfilm? :o. Surely it's not related to music  ;D

@Wallebalboa: It would be great if you could test the IDC5 for me. Sounds like it's the quickest way  :D
@saaboholic: Do you have a web-link for the Tillberga warehouse?

I just tested the I/O module and it works ...but .... its too fast so it turns on and off with the 50hz... if you plan to use standard 1-wire I/O board you should probably try to get hold of the AC version... if you plan to build the curcuit your self i guess a RC net on the 5V side will do the job to get rid of the 50Hz ...
let me know if you want the modules ... regs Anders

By accident I found a AC optocoupler what might do the trick- Cheap  :)
